How to make your own serum; Skin Sun-damaged Serum Recipe.

To promote my new eBook “How to make your own serum at home”
I would like to share the recipe about repairing the sun-damaged skin.

Sun exposure: Over a period of time, exposure to ultraviolet rays results in changes to the skin (freckles, age spots, rough skin). An even graver symptom would be the onset of skin cancer. Dermatologists call this effect photo aging in reference to the sun's rays that reduce the production of collagen responsible for maintaining the skin's elasticity. One's susceptibility to photo aging is determined by the amount of pigment in the skin as well as the frequency and duration one spends under the sun's rays.
Free Radicals : A free radical is an atom or a group of atoms with one or more unpaired electrons. Oxygen is a type of atom which can become a free radical. When skin is constantly exposed to UV rays, pollution or toxic waste, it can generate oxygen free radicals (oxidizing compounds). These free radicals may cause skin to age faster because cells oxidize. Substances called antioxidants, can be used in cosmetics to combat the free radicals.Antioxidant ingredients such as Vitamin E and derivatives of Vitamin A and C used on top of the skin can act as scavengers to stop free radicals from causing damage to the skin

Vegetable Oils that repair damaged skin; Argan Oil, Almond sweet Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Avocado oil, Black Cumin Seed Oil, Black Currant Seed Oil, Blueberry Seed Oil, Cocoa butter, Coconut oil, Cranberry Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Kukui Nut oil, Macadamia oil , Meadowfoam Seed Oil , Pomegranate Oil, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Rosehip oil, Sesame oil, Sunflower oil, Shea butter, Tamanu oil , Virgin coconut oil, Wheat germ oil
Essential oils for aging skin; Carrot seed, Frankincense, Jasmine, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Rosemary, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang-ylang, Fennel, Patchouli, Rose, Clary Sage, Rosewood, Cypress, Neroli, Grapefruit, Orange, Mandarin

Facial Serum recipe for damaged Skin
A wonder-working emollient proven to moisturize, rejuvenate, soothe and heal dry, chapped, irritated and inflamed skin. It protects the skin improves its suppleness and elasticity and promotes skin healing.
100ml container dark glass bottle
30ml Macadamia oil or Rice bran oil (optional; maceration of comfrey)
30ml Black cumin seed oil
20ml Virgin Coconut oil
10ml Tamanu oil
5ml Sesame oil
5ml Wheat germ oil
Essential Oils (optional) 10 drops ylang ylang and 10 drops orange
How to apply the Serum
I find the best time to do this treatment is right before going to bed. I think this gives my skin some time to absorb the beauty oil overnight while I sleep. Remember not to use too much serum oil on your skin as it can get a little greasy; you want to strive for a thin layer of oil on your skin. If after a minute or two your skin is oilier than you’d like, just remove the excess with a clean, dry towel or cloth.

The skin deserves much attention for it manifests your overall health or state of well-being. It provides you with valuable clues as to how you take care of yourself and how much attention your skin gets in your daily physical management. One way to maintain that youthful glow is to subscribe to a skin treatment regimen that will help your skin restore moisture when it's needed. Oil-based are more effective than water based lotions for they "lock-in" the moisture stored in the skin.
Making your own natural home-made facial serum is fun, easy, and can be completely customised to meet your specific skincare needs!

Micro-beads. Why we should read the labels of our cosmetics?

The exfoliating 'micro-beads' added to common bathroom scrubs may be wreaking havoc with life in the ocean from the tiniest worms, to humans having fish for dinner.

SPARKLES IN YOUR toothpaste. Exfoliating body scrub. Deep facial cleansers. When reading through the ingredients on your bathroom items, one item you wouldn't expect to see is plastic.
However, a significant number of personal care and cosmetic products contain tiny particles of plastic, called micro-beads.

Sometimes they're added as an abrasive to get that deeper clean, but sometimes serve no purpose other than decoration.

While the idea of plastic flecks in toothpaste is alarming enough, of far greater concern is emerging evidence that these plastic micro-beads and other tiny particles of plastic are finding their way into our waterways and embedding themselves in the marine food chain.

The listing of 'polyethylene' in the product ingredients is usually a giveaway that plastic microbeads are present, but sometimes this is listed as 'HDPE', for 'high-density polyethylene', or even 'PEHD'

That's why the industry should take some responsibility here and if they are going to use microplastics then they need to put that in plain English on packaging so people can make that choice.

Many questions about the impact of microplastics on the environment that researchers around the world are racing to answer, we would need to know where the contaminants are, what their distribution is, what their fate is after they get into the system, where do they move to, and then you need to know their toxicity at each point in time.

Home made healing & Disinfecting boo-boo powders

Home made healing & Disinfecting boo-boo powders

Minor accidents, abrasions and bruises will occur at the most inconvenient of times.

Specially in hot weather, It may be useful to know how you can help prevent infection when you can not apply a medical disinfectant like rubbing alcohol or an oily ointment. Here's a simple solution you can assemble

Disinfecting powder Recipe

  • 1/3 Corn Flour for the absorbency and consistency quality
  • 1/3 White Kaolin Clay for the absorbency and healing quality
  • 1/3 Zinc oxide for the natural anti- inflammatory and healing quality.
Instructions; Mix well all the powders, I like to use a grinder but you can sifter your powders.
How to Use; Dust the powder sparingly on irritated, infected areas a few times a week or as needed every night before going to bed. Avoid eye area.

Other powders you may want to add to this Disinfecting powder
  • 1 to 3 % Allantoin if scars need healing
  • 1 to 3%% Turmeric powder, another effective method for treating infections, can be applied on the wound..Turmeric powder is both a disinfectant and an antiseptic.
  • 1 to 3% Magnesium Stearate for the adhesion ,if you want the powder to stay on the skin
  • 1% to 30% (Instead of Zinc Oxide )Zinc Stearate more disinfecting calms the skin from irritation and if you want the powder to stay on the skin.
  • 5% Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, works to remedy imbalanced pH levels that contribute to and aggravate acne. Baking soda’s mild antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties also calm skin and cool out exacerbation of inflamed acne.
  • 1% to 30% (Instead of the Kaolin clay), you may use Diatomaceous Earth (essentially, silica) which helps with sensitive areas of skin that might become rashy and it also helps to draw out toxins. So, not only does DE help draw out moisture and remove toxins, but it also helps to ease sensitive skin.
  • 1% to 30% (Instead of the Kaolin clay) you may use Pink and/or Green clay. The blend will not be so white and be invisible on the skin

Special Recipes

  • Oily Skin; Tap a little powder into your loose powder and dust over make-up to stay shine free all day.
  • Acne; absorbs excess oil and reduces redness and irritation caused by breakouts. May be applied to skin to help control surface oil, disinfect and calm acne prone areas. Works wonders to quickly dry up open, infected pimples.
  • Infected Pimples; Apply with a cotton swab to infected or raw, erupted pimples to speed healing process.
  • Before and After Shaving; Dust lightly on post waxed or shaved skin
  • Healing scars; add some allantoin to the basic blend
  • Foundation Base for covering acne and acne scars. Mix the blend with some oxide pigments or some pink clay to make a mineral foundation
  • add some Zinc Stearate to make the blend more adhesive and anti- bacterial,
  • Zinc stearate or Zinc Oxide are both anti-inflammatory and really good sunscreen too, preventing acne to scar.
  • add some allantoin to heal acne scars.
  • Baby Powder; apply after the bath to prevent skin infection
  • Baby Powder for infected skin; add some Allantoin , Turmeric powder and Diatomaceous Earth to the basic blend
  • Body Powder add few drops of nice essential oils I like Orange, Lavender and Ylang and some Pink Clay to make it pretty
  • Foot Deodorant Powder; add few drops of disinfecting essential oils to the blend, I like Rose-Geranium, Spearmint and Lavender and with some Turmeric, Green Clay and Baking soda
For Animal Care
  • To calm skin rash and irritations, dust lightly over the skin,
  • Add 1-2% of Allantoin, its healing properties also make it suitable for treating minor wounds and skin irritations.
  • For flee/ lice prevention; add 10-30% of Diamaceous Earth in the base blend instead of the clay

I hope you will enjoy these very simple but so effective recipes ( so cheap too:)
Happy Natural skin care making :)

Citrus Vinegar Multi-Purpose Spray Natural Cleaner

The only cleaner you'll ever need!

An old time favourite!
This eco-friendly household cleaning spray can be used to clean almost any surface in your home. Highly disinfectant, Vinegar is more effective in reducing microbial contamination than many other alternative cleaners, the citrus oils of the citrus peels will boost your natural spray's cleaning force with vitamin C, while at the same time leaving your home smelling delightfully fruity and fresh, it is a great way to recycle citrus peels!
Great present for “Mum to be” or people suffering of Asthma or allergies.

  • Fill a large, wide mouth jar with citrus peels (such as lemons, oranges, mandarin limes, grapefruits any left over of your cooking or your juices). I also like to add some cinamon stick and some clove buds for the fragrance and their disinfectant proprieties.
  • Cover the peels with white vinegar. Let brew for four weeks, shaking the jar occasionally (to mix it up ). Strain (I did this twice).
  • Optional- Add some more clove buds, cinamon stick if you are not adding essential oils
  • Optional- Add one teaspoon of essential oils- If like me you don't like the smell of vinegar too much!
How to use; Test surfaces first before using
  • Dilute ½ cup with ½ cup of water with 1 teaspoon of detergent (like dish liquid) ( Optional for extra strength -and 1 or 2 tablespoons of Methylated spirit )use as a window cleaner, floor cleaner, counter tops, appliances
  • Use pure with 1 tablespoon of detergent and 2 tablespoons of Methylated spirit for a stove-top grease buster or heavy duty cleaning jobs.
  • Before filling the jar, I made sure the citrus peels were well scrubbed to remove any chemicals or pesticides.

Disinfecting Essential oil Combos that I like;

Natural Deodorant Stick with Copha

Easy Deodorant Stick with Copha

Irritant Free, Non sensitizing, Preservative-free, PABA free, Hypoallergenic and Food grade!

What is Copha?
Copha, a registered trademark of Peerless, is a form of vegetable fat shortening made from hydrogenated coconut oil. It is 100% fat, at least 98% of which is saturated. It also contains soy bean lecithin.

It is popular in Australia where it is used in many foods for children, such as rocky road, and chocolate crackles, which are made from Rice Bubbles, copha and cocoa powder. Copha is produced only in Australia, but there are many suppliers of hydrogenated coconut fat in various forms worldwide. In New Zealand, it is marketed as Kremelta. Known in Europe as coconut fat, it is available either in its pure form, or in solid form with lecithin added as an emulsifier. In France it is marketed as Végétaline. In Germany it is marketed as Palmin. In the United States it is not easily available

Coconut oil or Copha oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry. Because of its highsaturated fat content it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidification, lasting up to two years without spoiling. Many health organizations advise against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat
It is maybe not healthy to eat it but as a cosmetic it is sooo good for the skin!

The copha, I bought is mixed with Soya lecithin at the grocery store and it is another good thing for the skin. (No percentage of this ingredient is on the label.)

Soya Lecithin It helps to soften and moisturise the skin. Penetration Enhancer: Alters the skin structure, allowing other substances to penetrate deeper. It helps to repair free radical damage, soothing inflamed, irritated skin. Hydrophilic ingredient: It attracts water to the skin, working to prevent moisture loss from deep within the skin tissues. Thickener: Soya lecithin can add thickness to a formula. Moisturising: It is very moisturising, which is due to its high levels of Oleic and Linoleic Acid.  In relation to skin care, it has an advanced softening and moisturising action that leaves the skin soft and supple so it is very suitable for very dry & dehydrated skin.

Heavy Duty Deodorant Stick with Copha

10g rs Coconut Oil - raw, virgin coconut oil
40grs Cophra
20grs Beeswax - Yellow – (or white if you want a white stick)
10grs Diatomaceous Earth (DC)- (or white clay if you want a white stick)
10grs Corn
Essential Oils; 30 drops: 10 drops origano, 10 drops lemon grass, 10 drops cedar wood

Using an accurate digital scale, measure all ingredients (EXCEPT CORN, DC & EOs) into the upper part of your double-boiler.
Melt on low heat over bottom part of double-boiler until everything is melted

Turn off heat and allow to cool for a few minutes

Add diatomaceous Earth the corn and EOs; whisk vigorously to fully combine...and then whisk some more, pour in your clean container

Tip 1; If you want a white stick replace DC for white clay and the yellow beeswax for white beeswax (refined beeswax)

Why Diatomaceous earth-  (often referred to as "DE") is an off white talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. DE is almost entirely silica, which is a crucial trace element needed by our bodies, and one in which many are deficient. By adding DE into your homemade deodorant, will help with sensitive areas of skin that might become rashy and it also helps to draw out toxins. So, not only does DE help draw out moisture and remove toxins, but it also helps to ease sensitive skin. Remember to purchase food grade DE

Tip 2; I use heavy duty essentials oils (Origano, Lemon Grass and Cedar wood) but you can change for milder essential oils like rose geranium or lavender

Cedar wood Essential Oil. antiseborrhoeic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic, astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, insecticide, sedative and fungicide. Antisborrhoeics basically work in the endocrine system. They normalize sweat gland secretion. Oily faces, be gone! To help with a (seemingly) overactive sweat gland problem, it can be used in several ways.

Lemon grass Essential Oil, Lemongrass is an anti-microbial and anti-bacterial herb. It can help ward off skin infections as well as lessen skin issues caused by bacterial infections, such as folliculitis and cellulitis. Lemongrass is also fungicidal, which means it helps cure fungus infections on the skin. The herb also acts as an astringent, which constricts the skin. This helps to minimize pores, limit the secretions of oil and provide a temporary skin-firming treatment

Oregano essential oil: for its potential use as a natural, effective antibiotic - particularly as many dangerous bacteria become resistant to pharmaceutical preparations and may be of use for systemic infections such as of the candida fungus or other bacteria

Tip 3: this mixture sets quickly. Have your containers and all of your ingredients at the ready so you can work uninterrupted in the final steps.

If the mixture does set too quickly, remelt the remainder very GENTLY over low heat.
